Callun Mitchell keeps Marlborough moving

#Where MITO can take you

October 3 2026

Coastal breezes, plenty of sunshine, and protective mountain ranges create an ideal environment for Marlborough's viticulture scene.

It’s also the backdrop to a hands-on career for Field Service Technician Callun Mitchell.

Callun is developing his skills across vineyards, valleys and workshops, as he completes his apprenticeship with Tractor Repairs & Spares Ltd.

Working towards his qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering – Agricultural Equipment, Callun is gaining hands-on experience that keeps critical machinery operating when it’s needed most.

What makes your role unique?

The diversification: one day doing a service, next day travelling way up the valley. The variety of work is great. Right now, I’m working on a hand throttle cable of a tractor, and in a few months, I’ll be calibrating a Gregoire harvester.

What is your main responsibility?

Sending product out that’s maintained to a high standard.

What are the coolest things about your job?

I’d say it’s the locations partly—from the workshop to the Awatere Valley—and the clients that make the job.

Our customers really appreciate you being there to help. The client rapport and camaraderie of the workshop are really good.

Callun's favourite work story

I was on a night shift for harvest and it was two o’clock in the morning.

The two guys taking over for the next shift showed up, and then another workmate unexpectedly showed up and I said, ‘Hang on a minute…’, he took one look at us all standing there and the penny dropped that he’d turned up for the wrong, very early, shift. Gave us all a bit of a laugh.

Moments like that with the team can really make your day.
