Finding a job

Start your job search with confidence. Learn how to create a strong CV, connect with employers, and take the next steps toward your apprenticeship.

Start your journey

An apprenticeship or traineeship lets you step straight into the workforce—earning an income, building real‑world experience, and working toward a nationally recognised qualification at the same time.

If you’re not employed right now, that’s okay—everyone starts somewhere! We can help you connect with employers, build a great CV, and prepare for interviews so you can step into an apprenticeship with confidence.

Qualities that help you get hired

Most employers tell us the same thing: they can teach you the technical skills—what they’re really looking for is the right attitude.

  • A positive attitude – keen to learn and give things a go
  • Good listening skills – taking instructions on board and asking questions
  • Reliability – turning up on time, prepared, and ready to work
  • Willingness to learn – embracing new tasks, tools, and technology
  • Teamwork – working well with others and contributing
  • Respect and professionalism – being courteous, tidy, and safe on the job
  • Initiative – noticing what needs doing and stepping in to help

Getting your CV ready

One of the first things you’ll need is a CV. It’s your chance to show employers who you are, what you can do, and why you’re ready to start an apprenticeship.

You don't need to give potential employers your whole life story. Keep it simple, straight-forward, and make it clear you're keen to learn.

What to include

  • Your full name
  • Contact details (email, phone number, city)
  • Education
  • Driver licence type (if you have one, e.g. Learner/Restricted/Full)
  • Any qualifications and practical experience—if you completed StartUp, ShiftUp or RockUp, don't forget to include this!

Quick tip: Double‑check your spelling, and use an email address that’s suitable for job applications.

Time to get noticed

Once your CV is ready, it’s time to start putting yourself out there!

Finding a job in one of MITO’s industries starts with taking a few simple steps to get yourself in front of employers.

Where to look for jobs

  • MITO's Job Hub
  • Local workshop or dealership websites
  • Community Facebook pages or job boards
  • Seek or Trade Me Jobs
  • School careers advisor or Gateway coordinator
  • Call into workshops in your local area (make sure you take your CV with you!)

Interview time

Got an interview? Awesome!

Do some quick research on the company—what they do, where they’re located, and the type of work they specialise in.

  • Turn up on time (5-10 minutes early is best)
  • Dress tidily
  • Take a printed copy of your CV
  • Put your phone on silient and out of sight
  • Be polite and friendly
  • Ask questions (it shows you’re interested)
  • Thank the employer before you leave

A couple of simple questions like “What does a typical day look like?” or “What skills are most important for this role?” go a long way.
