The people at your side

Support in the workplace

Your employer or supervisor provides your main on‑job support by:

  • demonstrating the practical skills you need
  • overseeing your on‑job training
  • helping you gather evidence for your assessments
  • verifying your practical work through the MITO Portal.

They’re a key part of your learning journey.

MITO Training Advisors

Your Training Advisor is with you throughout your entire programme. During visits, they:

  • update your personalised training plans
  • provide your employer with progress reports
  • help you set short‑ and long‑term learning goals
  • arrange any required off‑job training
  • support you with understanding assessments and evidence requirements

Industry Mentors

The Industry Mentor Programme provides extra support from experienced technicians who can:

  • explain technical concepts
  • help you understand difficult parts of your programme
  • give additional guidance beyond your workplace support

This programme complements—not replaces—your on‑job training.

Māori and Pasifika learner support

Kaiwhakamanawa (Māori learner support)

Kaiwhakamanawa mentors provide:

  • cultural support and guidance
  • help with programme components you’re finding challenging
  • encouragement to build your own study skills and confidence
Pasifika Mentors

Available in Auckland and Bay of Plenty, the Pasifika Mentoring programme provides cultural and learning support specific to Pasifika learners, delivered by an external provider.

Literacy and numeracy support

As part of joining your MITO programme, you will have completed two online assessments—one for literacy and one for numeracy. These help us understand where you’re confident and where you may benefit from extra support during your training.

Even if you didn’t need or want help at the start, it’s never too late to ask for support. Many learners reach out partway through their programme when:

  • the reading load increases
  • theory assessments feel challenging
  • maths comes up in unfamiliar ways (e.g. tolerances, conversions, ratios)
  • confidence drops

If at any point you feel you’d benefit from extra help, MITO can arrange one‑on‑one support through Literacy Aotearoa tutors. They specialise in workplace literacy and numeracy and can help with:

  • reading technical information
  • understanding assessment questions
  • writing short answers
  • improving maths skills needed on the job
  • building general study confidence

Your Training Advisor can talk through your options, or you can request support directly at any time—no judgement, no barriers.

Quick tip

If you don’t have a suitable internet‑enabled device for eLearning or uploading assessments, MITO can provide a loan device to support your training.
