MITO learner toolkit

Everything you need to succeed while you learn on the job.

Make the most of studying with MITO and get the support you need to succeed.

Completing a MITO apprenticeship or traineeship is more than earning a qualification—it’s a chance to grow your skills, confidence, and career.

Whether you need help with your training, career planning, or staying on track, we’ve got tools, people, and resources ready to back you all the way.

Grow personally and professionally

Completing an apprenticeship or traineeship isn’t just about gaining technical skills—it’s about becoming confident, capable, and ready for the next step in your career. With each assessment you complete and every job you master at work, you’re building:

  • Real‑world skills that employers value
  • Confidence in your abilities and decision‑making
  • A pathway to more responsibility, more opportunities, and more earning potential
  • A recognised qualification that travels with you across the industry

Your apprenticeship is just the beginning—where you go next is up to you!

Study and assessment tips

Capture your evidence as you go
Take photos or short videos of the work you’re doing—practical evidence is easier to gather in the moment than trying to recreate it later.

Set yourself quick reminders
Use your phone, a notebook, or even a sign in your workspace to remind you to record evidence, check the Portal, or complete assessments.

Label and organise everything
Whether you’re removing components, preparing materials, or setting up equipment, keep parts, tools, and paperwork clearly labelled—it saves time and avoids mistakes.

Break tasks into smaller steps
Don’t wait until you're overwhelmed. Tackle assessments and practical tasks in bite‑sized pieces throughout the week.

Check the Portal often
Keep an eye on upcoming assessments, feedback from your supervisor or Training Advisor, and your progress against your training plan.

Ask questions early
If something doesn’t make sense—theory or practical—reach out to your Training Advisor, supervisor, or mentor before it becomes a bigger issue.

Keep your evidence neat and consistent
Clear photos, readable labels, and accurate notes make verification faster and help you stay organised.

Use downtime wisely
Quiet periods at work? Catch up on eLearning, review a module, or upload evidence while it’s fresh.

Your Training Advisor is here to help

Your Training Advisor is your main point of support throughout your training. They’ll visit you regularly, check in between visits, and are always just a message or email away.

Stay in regular contact – Your Training Advisor is there to help you—not just during site visits. If you’re unsure about anything in your programme, message or email them. They’re always happy to answer questions and keep your training on track!

Use meetings to your advantage – When your Training Advisor visits or checks in, talk openly about how things are going. Ask about your progress, get clarity on assessments, and discuss any challenges you’re facing at work or online.

Reach out early when you need support – If you’re struggling with theory, practical assessments, time management, or anything else, contact your Training Advisor as soon as possible. They can connect you with extra support, including:

  • Wellbeing
  • Mentors
  • Numeracy and literacy support
  • Loan devices
  • Scholarship opportunities
  • Financial assistance

Need some financial support?

Unexpected life costs can make it harder to stay on track with your training. The MITO Manaaki Fund offers one‑off financial support for learners who are experiencing hardship, helping with everyday expenses like food, childcare, and travel.
