Supporting learners in the workplace

Practical guidance and resources to support learners and build inclusive workplaces.

The following resources are available to help employers, supervisors, and managers remove barriers, build confidence, and provide practical, ongoing support.

MITO learner support services

MITO can support employers and learners through a range of services, including:

  • Free 24/7 counselling, available nationwide to learners through Vitae (excluding secondary school learners)
  • Assistive tools and learning support, such as loan devices, C-Pens, data cards, and user-friendly accessibility tools
  • Literacy and numeracy support, with all new learners completing online assessments (about 20 minutes each), and one‑on‑one support available through Literacy Aotearoa if needed
  • Specialist Mentor support as required.

Information to help employers remove barriers to employment for people living with disabilities.

New Zealand Disability Employers’ Network

A national network offering guidance, best practice, resources, and links to support disability inclusion in the workplace.

Workbridge

Advice, recruitment support, in‑work assistance, and access to funding (where appropriate) to support employees living with disabilities and their employers.

Toitū te Waiora

A range of employer-focused resources have been developed to help supervisors, managers, and employers better support learners with disabilities.

Resources include:

  • Checklist for assessing an organisation’s ability to attract and retain disabled people
  • Guidance for interviewing disabled people
  • Practical tips for people managers
  • Information on reasonable accommodations

Pathways Awarua

This free online learning resource contains modules anyone can complete in their own time, at their own pace. It’s easy to use, fun and engaging. A few topics they touch on include:

  • Literacy and numeracy
  • Health and safety
  • Money matters

Altogether Autism—Takiwātanga modules

Altogether Autism provides free self-paced learning modules to help you and your staff build knowledge around neurodiversity.

The three modules cover:

  • Neurodiversity
  • Sensory processing
  • Brain, body, and behaviour

Disability Modules (TEC)

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) provides three free online modules designed to build disability confidence and knowledge in the workplace: 

  • Disability Confidence 101 (40–50 mins)
  • Tertiary Education & Training Educators (90–100 mins)
  • Tertiary Education & Training Support Staff (60–70 mins)
