Alex Pearce is cool as ice
Next time you head up the mountain for a day on the slopes, there’s a whole team working behind the scenes to make sure your trip runs smoothly.
Based at Coronet Peak, Alex has spent the past three years playing an important role in keeping the resort operating throughout the busy winter seasons, as he works towards his qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering – Plant and Equipment.
What makes your role unique?
The environment being a ski resort. Plus the machines and equipment to work on from snowmobiles and snow groomers to chair lifts and the snow making system.
What are some of your main responsibilities?
As an apprentice diesel mechanic, I help look after and maintain the fleet of equipment that Coronet Peak has, as well as snow clearing on the roads and car parks during the winter. The mechanics use a tractor, snow groomer, plus other trucks with snow plows, to clear and look after the road so the customers can access the resort trouble free.
What are the coolest things about your job?
Operating machines with plows on the front, clearing snow. Keeping everything that breaks down running so that the thousands of people that come up each day can enjoy their time.
Alex's favourite work story
My favourite story is having a film crew for a series called snow patrol ride along with me in our landcruiser and grit truck filming what it's like to look after the road and rescue people/cars that are stuck and need assistance.
