Rizan Mohammed shines under Southern Lights

Seeing the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many. Since completing his qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering – Plant and Equipment, Rizan Mohammed has taken his skills to one of the most remote places on earth.

Based at McMurdo Station in Antarctica, Rizan's Antarctic experience comes with spectacular views of the Southern Lights and some unforgettable challenges.

What makes your role unique?

The location! Not many people get to say they’ve worked in Antarctica.

What are some of your main responsibilities?

My main responsibilities are to ensure my team has work lined up, and assist them where I can. I’ve also been in the office doing a lot more paperwork, which has been a change of environment compared to Field Service back home, however I have been enjoying the change. I also go out in the field from time to time when I need a break from the office.

What are the coolest things about your job?

The coolest thing about my job is definitely the environment I’m in. I get to see Aurora, walk on three-mile-deep ice above the Ocean, and fly in a C17 [a large military transport aircraft].

I have also come to the Caterpillar time capsule, as these machines we work on are older than me!
