StartUp

StartUp®

StartUp offers Year 11 to 13 students the chance to earn micro-credentials in the automotive industry that are approved by NZQA, credits towards NCEA Levels 2 and 3, and a great introduction to the working environment.

Get qualified with MITO

Supported by MITO in partnership with secondary schools and local businesses, StartUp® has both theory eLearning and practical learning in a workshop – it’s just like a mini-apprenticeship!

Programme outline

Smaller than a qualification, micro-credentials certify achievement of a specific set of skills and knowledge and are approved by NZQA.

Designed to be completed over two years, with the first year completing the Ignition programme and the second year completing the Accelerate programme.

For the Accelerate programme there are two strands for the student to choose from: Automotive Engineering or Collision Repair. Upon completion of a programme, students will achieve one of the following micro-credentials - approved by NZQA and listed on their NZQA Record of Achievement.

Micro-credentials available

Learners will gain a broad understanding of the New Zealand motor industry, including its occupational areas and structure, and develop safe work habits when handling tools, equipment and hazardous materials.

They’ll build foundational knowledge of key automotive systems such as braking, steering and suspension, understand common engineering tasks, and learn essential digital imaging requirements used in the collision repair industry.

Learners will build hands‑on skills and foundational knowledge for a future in automotive engineering.

They’ll learn about petrol and diesel engines, vehicle emissions, EFI and diesel fuel systems, and the correct use of automotive lubricants.

Students will also develop practical abilities such as welding basics, servicing a vehicle or machine, and safely removing and replacing road wheels.

Open to Year 12 or 13 students who either:

  • Completed StartUp Ignition
  • On their NZ Record of Achievement, hold a minimum of the following unit standards: 21718, 29579, and 29580.

Learners will gain introductory skills for the collision repair and refinishing sector, including knowledge of motor body parts, trim, bumpers and bolted‑on panels.

They’ll learn to select and use fastening systems, complete pre‑strip procedures, remove and replace damaged panels, and reinstate essential corrosion protection.

Practical experience also includes safely removing and replacing road wheels.

Open to Year 12 or 13 students who either:

  • Completed StartUp Ignition
  • On their NZ Record of Achievement, hold a minimum of the following unit standards: 21718, 29579, and 29580.

Quick look questions

Can students enrol in StartUp through Gateway 3+2?

Yes! StartUp is eligible for Gateway as long as the student completes at least 20 credits per year.

StartUp unit standards can apply to the 3+2 programme for Year 13 students that have achieved NCEA 2. With the 3+2 programme the student is enrolled three days at school and is then signed into a Training Agreement with MITO for the remaining two days and in paid employment at a business that is able to support the practical learning required for StartUp.

How does the student access eLearning?

The student will require a unique email address and access to an internet-enabled computer, tablet or mobile phone. After enrolment the student will receive an email with their log-in details to MITO’s learning management system.
