MITO launches targeted training for New Zealand’s waste transport sector

MITO has introduced two new Waste Transport Driver micro-credentials to meet the growing need for skilled drivers in New Zealand’s waste and recycling sector.

Developed in collaboration with industry, these qualifications offer practical, on-the-job training for safely and efficiently collecting and transporting waste from residential, commercial, and industrial areas. As demand for waste services increases, these micro-credentials help employers upskill their teams and attract new talent to the sector.

Guy Smith, Chief Health, Safety and Risk Officer at Waste Management NZ (WM NZ), was involved in the development of the micro-credentials from the start.

“MITO’s partnership with WM New Zealand has resulted in micro-credentials that are practical, relevant, and ready to be used on the ground. They’re a proactive step towards empowering the people who keep Aotearoa clean and our communities safe. They will not only protect workers and the public but also ensure the industry remains resilient, responsive, and respected.”

Subject matter expert Neil Carr, Driver and Operator Academy Manager at WM NZ, was also a key player in developing the content of these credentials.

“These waste industry qualifications will enable drivers and operators to gain valuable skills and knowledge that support their professional growth in the sector, while also helping to keep them safe in what can be a high-risk environment—particularly when working roadside.

“With NZTA discontinuing WasteMINZ’s Kerbside Collection Traffic Leader qualification, this presents an exciting opportunity to develop truck-specific qualifications that cater not only to kerbside collection roles, but also to a broader range of industry needs.”

Verna Niao, Executive Director of MITO, says the qualifications are an important step forward in supporting workforce development.

“Drivers in the waste transport industry are part of our everyday lives, delivering essential services that keep our communities safe and running smoothly. They are highly skilled professionals whose work often goes unseen but is critical to our daily wellbeing. These micro-credentials reflect the industry’s commitment to recognising their contribution and supporting employers to invest in their people—helping build strong, respected careers in this vital sector.”

The two new micro-credentials are:

Waste Transport Driver – Operations and Safety (Level 3)

Collect and transport waste safely using a hookload, rearload, gantry, or front end loader vehicle under limited supervision.

Waste Transport Driver – Operations and Safety Using a Left-Hand Waste Collection Vehicle (Level 3)

Collect and transport waste safely using a left-hand sideloader or low entry vehicle under limited supervision.

Enrolments opened nationwide from 29 July. Whether you're new to the industry or looking for a career change, these micro-credentials offer a valuable opportunity to gain recognised skills in a vital sector.
