A future built on learning: 2026 MITO and Inspiring Futures Foundation scholarship recipient pursues continued growth

Harry Shaw, Workshop Manager at Truck Tech Solutions in Silverdale, is the 2026 recipient of the Janet Lane MNZM Scholarship as part of MITO’s annual scholarship programme, with support from the Inspiring Futures Foundation (IFF)

Awarded to just one individual each year, the Janet Lane MNZM Scholarship recognises the vital importance of leadership in the industries MITO supports, serving as a tribute to the remarkable career of Janet Lane MNZM. As a former long-standing Chief Executive of MITO, Janet was a truly exceptional leader whose vision for excellence continues to inspire the next generation.

The scholarship is intended to support a comprehensive course of management and leadership study. Harry’s chosen programme, the Icehouse Owner Manager Programme, focuses on strengthening leadership strategies and gaining fresh perspectives on a business and how it runs. The five-month programme combines expert-led sessions, one-on-one coaching, peer learning, and real-world case studies.

This is not Harry’s first MITO scholarship - it’s not even his second. He has been awarded three scholarships since 2022, and has a long-standing relationship with MITO, having completed four MITO training programmes throughout his career as a heavy automotive technician: the New Zealand Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering - Road Transport (Level 3 and 4), Business (First Line Management) (Level 4), and Heavy Automotive Engineering (Level 5). He is currently completing MITO’s Level 5 Electric Vehicle programme.

Harry says his commitment to building his skills has been continually strengthened through MITO’s opportunities.

"I am truly grateful to MITO. The variety of courses has certainly supported me to grow and develop many new skills. I have done all the available programmes and achieved all the relevant scholarships - other than the Janet Lane scholarship, which I am now thrilled to accept."

The Janet Lane MNZM Scholarship is designed to enhance and accelerate opportunities for individuals whose development of leadership capabilities will have a significant impact on the performance, productivity, and profitability of their sector.

Truck Tech Solutions has recently been through a period of growth after acquiring a new workshop and expanding their site to become one of the largest heavy vehicle workshops from the Harbour Bridge to Whangārei. These developments make the company an ideal hothouse for a Janet Lane MNZM Scholarship recipient.

Harry says, "I have goals in which, through positive leadership and management, we can change not only our workshop and team, but change and drive a new industry standard for the heavy vehicle workshop."

Helen Shaw, Company Director at Truck Tech Solutions, fully supported Harry’s application.

"Harry is passionate and eager to learn. I truly feel that with the support of the Janet Lane MNZM Scholarship, alongside Harry's drive and motivation, the Icehouse programme Harry has chosen will assist him in taking his career to the next level, which is to become a company director and shareholder of Truck Tech Solutions."

Verna Niao, MITO Chief Executive, agrees, "Harry’s achievements reflect the very heart of MITO’s mission-to grow capability, confidence, and leadership within our sectors. His continued pursuit of excellence, combined with the support of his employer, demonstrates what is possible when talent meets opportunity. We congratulate Harry on receiving the Janet Lane MNZM Scholarship and are excited to see how he applies this next stage of development to strengthen both his company and the wider industry."

Louise Sixton, IFF Trust Convenor, adds: "The IFF is proud to support dedicated learners like Harry, whose commitment to professional growth extends well beyond technical skill. His passion for leadership and positive change is exactly what the Janet Lane MNZM Scholarship stands for, and his growth will not only elevate his own career but also support the development of the next generation of technicians and leaders."
