StartUp® — for students

Find out what it’s like to work in the motor industry — before you leave school.

What is StartUp®?

StartUp® is MITO’s programme for students at secondary school. It gives you the chance to experience the motor industry and learn all the necessary skills for starting out in it.

You can also gain the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Foundation Skills) (Level 1).

Find out more about this qualification and what you need to do to achieve it.

Getting started with StartUp®

First, you complete the Ignition programme, where you achieve four unit standards. Two unit standards will need to be completed in the classroom. You will learn about:

  • the New Zealand motor industry
  • safety in the workplace.

As part of Ignition you get to spend time in a workplace while you work on practical Ignition unit standards.

When you have completed the Ignition programme you can enrol in the Accelerate programme, you can complete practical unit standards towards a National Certificate in Motor Industry (Foundation Skills) (level 1).

These are some of the things you can choose to learn:

  • how to perform servicing checks on a vehicle
  • how to use hand tools and workshop equipment
  • how to detail and groom a vehicle
  • and much more!

With StartUp®, you can gain the theory, experience, and unit standards you need to move straight into a MITO apprenticeship after school.
