Becoming a StartUp® employer

Here’s some more information about the StartUp® programme to help you decide about becoming a StartUp® employer.

StartUp® employers needed from across the motor industry

Your organisation can be from any sector of the motor industry: cars, farm vehicles, heavy equipment, motorcycles, trailer boats, or outdoor power equipment.

The work you do can be just as varied. It can include collision repair, paint refinishing, and automotive electrical or mechanical work.

The wider the range of employers we have, the more options we have for our students.

Getting a student

When you register your interest with MITO, we may not have a StartUp® student for you immediately. We provide your details to secondary schools involved in StartUp® in your area who have students looking for a placement.

You get to meet any student before agreeing to take them on, so you can make sure they will fit in with your business.

Training Capacity Assessment

If you are not already involved in industry training through MITO, we conduct a simple Training Capacity Assessment of your workplace. This is to make sure it is suitable for the student.

The assessment covers areas such as:

  • the equipment and range of work you have available
  • the qualifications and experience of the people who will be training the student
  • how much supervision will be available
  • compliance with health and safety legislation
  • compliance with local body regulations
  • unit standards that could be completed in your workplace.

You will receive an introductory booklet providing you with valuable information about the two programmes and how they work.

Our MITO Industry Training Advisor will meet with you and the student to go over what you and the student believe can be done during the time of ther placement.

Find out more about the unit standards and qualification the students work towards and about the assessment process.
