What is this unit standard about?

This unit standard is for people who work in the automotive refinishing industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of touching up pearl finishes
  • check the preparation
  • prepare and apply top coats.

Should I have completed any other unit standards first?

We recommend that you should have completed unit standard 5708 (Identify and use primers, fillers, and sealers and prepare for top coats in the motor industry) or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

How will this unit standard be assessed?

You will be required to:

  • prove your theory knowledge of touching up pearl finishes
  • prepare the surface for the top coat
  • prepare, match and apply groundcoat, pearlcoat and clearcoat
  • rectify any minor defects in the finished surface.

This will involve completing the following types of assessment:

  • case study
  • workplace exemplar
  • workplace report.
