This is an elective unit standard for the Automotive Electrical and Mechanical strand of the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Advanced Technical) (Level 5).

What is this unit standard about?

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • check a heavy vehicle's anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control system for compliance
  • rectify ABS and/or traction control system faults.

The term heavy vehicles includes air-braked trucks, tractors, buses, and/or trailers which have a gross vehicle mass of over 3,500kg.

Should I have completed any other unit standards first?

You must have a driver licence for the class of vehicle being tested (Classes 2-5) .

We recommend that you should have completed unit standard 15479 (Test and rectify pneumatic brake faults on heavy vehicles, trailers, and machines) or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

How will this unit standard be assessed?

You will be required to:

  • check a heavy vehicle's ABS and traction control system for compliance, including verifying and isolating faults
  • rectify ABS and/or traction control system faults, including clearing fault codes and implementing preventive measures where applicable.

This will involve completing a workplace report.

Special tools and equipment or range of work required

You will need:

  • a multi-meter (a scan tool is optional)
  • access to heavy vehicles with ABS and/or traction control system faults.
