Download full details of unit standard 15375.

What is this unit standard about?

This unit standard is for people in the automotive heavy engineering industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of electronic components used in automotive heavy engineering applications
  • demonstrate knowledge of sensors and actuators used in automotive electronic control systems
  • demonstrate knowledge of automotive electronic control systems
  • test an electronically controlled system for faults
  • rectify faults in an electronically controlled system.

Should I have completed any other unit standards first?

No.

How will this unit standard be assessed?

You will be required to:

  • prove your theory knowledge of electronic components used in automotive heavy engineering applications, their function, common use, and circuit symbol
  • prove your theory knowledge of the different types of sensors and actuators used in automotive electronic control systems, what they sense and how they are tested
  • prove your theory knowledge of automotive electronic control systems, their operations, test procedures, and precautions
  • test for and rectify electronically controlled system faults.

This will involve completing the following types of assessment:

  • case study
  • workplace report.

Special tools and equipment or range of work required

You will need a multi-meter. A scan tool is optional.

The range of systems may include, but is not limited to, control systems fitted to:

  • engines
  • transmissions
  • hydraulic equipment
  • brakes
  • self-levelling devices.

The range of components to be replaced may include, but is not limited to:

  • sensors
  • actuators
  • wiring
  • electronic control module (ECM).
