Unit standard 11731

Unit standard 11731

Analyse engine and components for mechanical failure and/or potential failure

Version 3; Level 5; 6 credits

This is an elective unit standard for the Automotive Electrical and Mechanical strand of the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Advanced Technical) (Level 5).

Download full details of unit standard 11731.

What is this unit standard about?

This unit standard is for people in the automotive machining or automotive engineering industries.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • investigate the symptoms of engine failure
  • examine engine components for signs of failure and/or potential failure
  • analyse the cause of engine component failure.

Should I have completed any other unit standards first?

We recommend you should have completed unit standard 11726 (Describe engine design factors and machining practices) or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

How will this unit standard be assessed?

You will be required to:

  • investigate the symptoms of engine failure by visual inspection, running engine tests, and oil analysis
  • dismantle the engine and examine the components for signs of failure and/or potential failure
  • analyse the cause of engine component failure
  • provide a report to the customer or supervisor outlining the cause of failure and feasibility of repair.

This will involve completing a workplace report.

Special tools and equipment or range of work required

You will need:

  • fine tolerance measuring equipment
  • an engine oil analysis report (one only)
  • access to engines to be dismantled, inspected, and measured for component failure.
