Support and resources for your apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is a significant undertaking — but you won’t be alone! MITO is here to help and has well-developed systems to make sure you receive the best support possible.

Sources of support

When you become a MITO apprentice, you can expect help and support from various sources — on and off the job.

In your workplace

Your employer or supervisor will be your main support during your apprenticeship. They’ll teach you the skills of the job and oversee your training.

Your MITO Industry Training Advisor

Your local MITO Industry Training Advisor (ITA) is involved with you right through your apprenticeship.

When you start your apprenticeship, your ITA meets with you and your employer to explain the process.

They then visit you at least four times a year to make sure your training is on track. During these visits they:

  • update your personalised training plans with you
  • provide your employer with up-to-date reports on your training activity
  • set goals with you and your employer to help you achieve your qualification.

You can contact them at any time with questions.

MITO National Office

The team at MITO's National Office is available to answer your questions on anything, from annual training fees, to resource materials for training, to off-job training.

You are entitled to up to 80 hours off-job training a year. The team makes all the arrangements for this — block courses, day-release courses, or evening classes, or a combination of these. It depends on what suits you and your employer.

Your training provider

Your training provider will provide help with your theory and practical work. At off-job training, you will receive help with your theory assignments as well as practical skills not usually practised in your workplace. You can also contact your training provider tutor if you need help with your assignments.

Resource materials

The resource materials for your apprenticeship are designed for ease of use and to allow a step-by-step approach to achieving your qualification.

Your workplace will be provided with a training manual, which has detailed information on each unit standard, including:

  • what you must achieve
  • any unit standards you need to have completed beforehand
  • the tools and equipment you need
  • what you need to do to pass the unit standard (practical)
  • what you need to know to pass the unit standard (theory)
  • how the unit standard is assessed.

Your pocket-sized Practical Jobs Record book is designed to help you keep track of your practical work related to unit standards.

The Record of Achievement book is your tool to help track your progress and achievements.

You will receive assignments and tests from your training provider (learning resources in electronic form are available with some qualifications).

When your ITA visits, you, your ITA, and your employer will jointly prepare a Goal Sheet. This helps to prioritise your study goals and keeps you on track with your learning.
