Purpose and content of the National Certificate

Purpose:

This certificate is for people in the sailmaking industry. All holders of this certificate will be able to demonstrate knowledge of sails and rigging and make, modify, and repair sails. They will also be able to meet customers and sell goods and services. In the elective section they will have the choice of doing related canvas work, making a boat cockpit canopy, performing management and marketing tasks, operating a plot cutter, and designing sails.

The qualification is a stand alone qualification and is designed to recognise generic skills as well as workplace skills. It also gives the opportunity for learners to obtain management, marketing, and sail design skills. There are a number of canvas fabrication unit standards in the qualification, which could lead on to the National Certificate in Canvas Fabrication.
