Moderation of MITO assessments against unit standards

Each year MITO registered have their assessments moderated.

Overview of MITO’s internal moderation process

Moderation is the process we use to make sure that:

  • assessment is fair, valid, and at the national standard
  • assessors are making consistent judgements about candidates’ performance.

Our moderation system covers assessment in the motor industry and industrial textile fabrication industry. It has two parts:

National internal moderation (MITO registered assessors)

National internal moderation covers MITO’s own assessment materials and our registered assessors and contracted training providers.

Every year MITO is required to moderate the assessment materials and assessor decisions of:

  • assessors registered with MITO
  • organisations contracted to deliver training and assessment on MITO’s behalf.

Assessment materials

MITO assessment materials undergo pre-assessment moderation by MITO before registered assessors use them.

Assessor decisions

MITO uses two methods to moderate assessor decisions:

  • cluster group moderation meetings
  • post-assessment moderation submissions to moderate assessors’ decisions after they have used the materials for assessment.

How MITO assessors can prepare for a cluster group meeting

All MITO-registered assessors have to participate in a cluster group moderation meeting every year.

Here is a checklist to help you prepare for this meeting.
