Becoming a MITO registered assessor

Applying to register

Before you apply—unit standard 4098

Before you can apply to be a registered assessor, you need to complete unit standard 4098: Use standards to assess candidate performance. We need to be able to confirm this on your New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) record of learning.

If you want to register as a workplace assessor, you’ll need the support of your employer to be one, so check it out with them first.

You can discuss becoming a contracted or workplace assessor with your local Industry Training Advisor (ITA).

Contact us if you have any queries about your application.

Approving your application

We get your application evaluated by an approved Technical Advisor and the MITO Quality Assurance Manager.

We will contact you if we need more information about your ability to make the kinds of assessments you have applied for — your ‘assessing scope’.

Your registration

Once we approve your application, we send you a registration approval letter and a procedure manual.

Your local ITA then contacts you to arrange for your induction into MITO’s processes for registered assessors and to give you your assessor stamp.

Your registration period as an assessor is three years. However, in some cases MITO may review and shorten the registration period.

Terms of your registration

These are the terms you must fulfil to keep your registration current.

  • You must assess a minimum of 20 credits a year.
  • You must participate in MITO’s annual moderation as requested.
  • You must notify MITO of any changes that may affect your registration.
  • You must participate in at least one assessor up-skilling session every three years.
  • You must notify MITO of any conflicts of interest in the area you are assessing.

If you don’t meet the terms of your registration, we may review your assessor status.

Re-registration

Two months before your registration is due to expire, we will invite you to apply to re-register.

Make sure you send a completed application form that gets to us by the date your registration ends. Otherwise you will not remain registered.

Applying to re-register

To apply to be re-registered, repeat the process for your first application, as described in the previous section.

Complete this form for re-registration as a workplace assessor.

Complete this form for re-registration as a contracted assessor.

You may not have to provide all the evidence you sent with your first application, as we will have it on file. If we need any additional information from you, we will let you know.

Contact us if you have any queries about your application for re-registration.

Approving your re-registration

When we consider your application for re-registration, we look at your history as an assessor. We also check whether you have consistently met your terms of registration.

Sometimes we have to ask you to supply additional evidence to support the assessing scope that you have applied for.

The reason for this is that qualifications are constantly being reviewed and updated. The qualifications approved in your assessing scope when you previously applied may no longer be up to date. That may mean that your assessing scope does not stay the same from one registration period to the next.

We will notify you of your successful re-registration.
