Assessors — the key to high-quality training
Assessors assess an apprentice’s competence against standards that MITO sets.
Being a good assessor — assessing apprentices fairly, validly, and consistently — is an important skill, and MITO places great value on that skill and experience.
You need the ability to build relationships with apprentices and their employers and supervisors. You need to both assess and encourage the apprentice, and provide feedback on their progress to them and their employer or supervisor.
You also need to keep your knowledge and skills up to date in the areas you’re assessing. As a registered assessor, you will need to participate in MITO moderation every year and undertake up-skilling every three years.
MITO is committed to continually improve the training for the apprentices and industries that we serve. We look for a similar commitment from our assessors.
MITO employs two kinds of assessors to do workplace assessments:
- contracted assessors
- workplace assessors.
Contracted assessors
Contracted assessors are independent of a specific workplace. They can do assessments in any workplace, once a MITO Industry Training Advisor (ITA) has arranged for an assessment to take place.
Contracted assessors also carry out Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) assessments, assessing the current skills of MITO apprentices towards a National Certificate.
Workplace assessors
Workplace assessors do assessments only in their own workplace or group of workplaces. If you want to become a workplace assessor, your employer needs to support your application, so discuss it with them first.
Having a workplace assessor in their workplace is of benefit to your employer as it results in a discount on MITO annual training fees.
