The Grass Kart Challenge.

Each year, for the last four years, the Grass Kart Challenge has taken place in the South Island. It is a competition for secondary school students that involves constructing a grass kart and competing in a series of competitions at the final event.

The students are required to build their own grass karts within a specific set of requirements and using equipment from a specific list.

The whole process takes place from the launch in March; through to the Mid Build in July where qualified engineers check the karts; and finishing in September for the final competition. At the final event the karts are checked over again the night before the competitions start, and students are given final instructions from the engineers to ensure safety and performance for the next day.

The Karts are then judged in four different categories: construction; appearance; record keeping; and performance. The scores are then added up to reveal the overall winner.

This year’s winner was the team from Northern Southland College who gained the most points in construction, appearance and record keeping.

Next year’s Grass Kart Challenge will be held in Otago and will also include pocket bikes in a separate category so is sure to add even more excitement!
