Jayden Bramwell has started up a successful career as an Outdoor Power Equipment Technician through the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation’s (MITO) StartUp® programme.
Jayden was hooked on a career in the industry after seeing the variety of outdoor power tools and machinery at Motueka’s automotive workshop N S Rogers Ltd. Jayden’s uncle worked for the company and motivated Jayden to take a look at career options in the motor industry.
At the time Jayden was studying at Motueka High School and his school were able to use MITO’s StartUp® programme to set up work experience at N S Rogers’ Ltd outdoor power equipment workshop.
MITO’s StartUp® programme allows students access to motor industry workplaces to gain experience on the job and learn some essential skills while gaining credits toward a nationally recognised qualification.
For two years Jayden continued his studies at school completing the theory for a National Certificate in Motor Industry Foundation Skills, and doing the practical elements of the course while working at N S Rogers Ltd.
Jayden obviously made a good impression on his employer and was offered an apprenticeship through MITO in outdoor power equipment (National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering).
For nearly 18 months, Jayden has been enthusiastically working his way through his apprenticeship with the support of MITO’s Industry Training Advisor Paul Hawkes.
Paul says, “Jayden has thrived in the workshop and N S Rogers Ltd have recognised his potential and nurtured him through the training process.”
Paul goes on to say that 18-year-old Jayden started out doing minor maintenance on equipment and has quickly built up knowledge and experience and is now working on bigger machinery, fixing faults and learning about complex tools and materials.
Jayden says the most rewarding part of his role is road-testing the equipment to check all the faults are fixed. He drives the smaller tractors and ride-on lawnmowers to a nearby orchard for a road-test around the property to check the quality of servicing. This gives Jayden an insight into how well the machinery is working so he can ensure the customer has their outdoor power equipment running in top order.
Jayden is excited about working in the industry and credits MITO’s StartUp® programme as helping him establish his career in the motor industry.
